  • Description

AUSTRIAN CUSTOMS OFFICIALS, WHO HAVE THREATENED STRIKE ACTION IN SUPPORT OF CLAIMS BY THE POLICE FOR INCREASED PAY, BEGAN A "WORK-TO-RULE" CAMPAIGN AT THE BORDER CROSSINGS AUG 7.

LINES OF CARS UP 12 MILES LONG QUEUED AT THE MAIN CROSSING POINTS. FILM SHOT AT SALZBURG, SHOWS MOTORISTS WAITING TO CROSS THE BORDERS. NORMALLY FIVE CARS ARE DEALT WITH A MINUTE, BUT VEHICLES WERE TAKING UP TO QUARTER OF AN HOUR TO CROSS THE CONTROL POINT.

THE BAVARIAN MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR ADVISED MOTORISTS TO SEEK LESS FREQUENTED CROSSING POINTS. TRAINS TO AUSTRIA WERE BEING DELAYED FOR UP TO AN HOUR. AT SOME CROSSING POINTS THE FRONTIER WAS CLOSED FOR A SHORT TIME TO PREVENT TRAFFIC CHAOS.

IN VIENNA AND OTHER AUSTRIAN CITIES, POLICE HAD THREATENED A TOTAL STRIKE AUG 9, UNLESS THE DISPUTE WAS SETTLED. ON AUG 7, POLICE OFFICERS CONTINUED A SERIES OF WARNING STRIKES BY LEAVING THEIR POSTS FOR THREE HOUR PERIODS. THE NEXT DAY, HOWEVER, THEY CALLED OFF THE STRIKE THREAT SO THAT NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE GOVERNMENT COULD BEGIN AGAIN.
