  • Description

AFTER A SERIES OF ENTERTAINING RALLIES BY THE VARIOUS POLITICAL PARTIES, JAMAICANS WENT TO THE POLLS APRIL 10, FOR THE THIRD TIME IN THREE YEARS, TO ELECT A GOVERNMENT TO TAKE CONTROL WHEN THE ISLAND BECOMES INDEPENDENT NEXT AUGUST. VOTING HAD TAKEN PLACE PREVIOUSLY TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT JAMAICA SHOULD JOIN THE BRITISH WEST INDIES FEDERATION; THE VOTE WENT AGAINST FEDERATION, AND JAMAICA WAS NOW SET TO ELECT A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT.

THE TWO MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES CONTESTING THE ELECTION WERE THE RULING PEOPLE'S NATIONAL PARTY, LED BY MR.NORMAN MANLEY, PRIME MINISTER FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS; AND THE JAMAICAN LABOUR PARTY, LED BY 78-YEAR-OLD SIR ALEXANDER BUSTAMANTE, PRIME MINISTER FOR TEN YEARS BEFORE MR.MANLEY. THE TWO MEN ARE COUSINS, AND THE RADICAL PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY USED THE CAMPAIGN SLOGAN: "BREAK THE COUSIN CHAIN". UNFORTUNATELY FOR THEM, THE P.P.P. AND OTHER INDEPENDENT PARTIES POLLED LESS THAN TWO PER-CENT OF THE 70.05 VOTING PERCENTAGE.

POLLING STARTED SLOWLY, BUT SPEEDED UP AFTER WORKING AND SHOPPING HOURS. FINAL RESULTS SHOWED A SWEEPING VICTORY FOR THE LABOUR PARTY (283,351 VOTES), WHO FINISHED WITH 26 SEATS - 11 MORE THAN THEY HAD IN THE LAST GOVERNMENT. MR.MANLEY'S PARTY (278,704 VOTES) FINISHED WITH 19 SEATS - EIGHT LESS THAN THEY PREVIOUSLY HELD. THE INDEPENDENTS LOST ALL THREE OF THEIR SEATS.

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING HIS VICTORY, SIR ALEXANDER BUSTAMANTE ANNOUNCED HE WOULD SEEK A DEFENCE TREATY WITH THE UNITED STATES. "THE TREATY IS TO PROTECT US IN AN EMERGENCY OR FOREIGN INVASION," HE DECLARED, AS CHAMPAGNE FLOWED AT HIS HOME. HIS SUPPORTERS JUBILANTLY RANG BELLS, WHICH WERE BANNED BY THE FORMER GOVERNMENT AS AN ELECTION SYMBOL. SIR ALEXANDER ALSO SAID: "MY GOVERNMENT IS ANTI-COMMUNIST, AND ANYTHING THAT IS AGAINST THE CHURCH WE ARE AGAINST. WE WILL NOT ALLOW COMMUNISTS IN OUR LAND."
