  • Description

AMERICA'S NEW AMBASSADOR TO SOUTH VIETNAM, MR. ELLSWORTH BUNKER, ARRIVED IN SAIGON ON TUESDAY IN FIVE AND A HALF HOURS AFTER THE DEPARTURE OF HIS PREDECESSOR, MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE.

MR. BUNKER, A VETERAN DIPLOMAT, HELPED TO NEGOTIATE AN END TO THE BLOODY CIVIL WAR IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN 1965. HE ARRIVED FROM KATMANDU WHERE HE HAD BEEN HOLIDAYING WITH HIS WIFE, CAROL LAISE, AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO NEPAL.

AT A NEWS CONFERENCE BEFORE HIS DEPARTURE MR. LODGE SAID HE FELT THE VIETNAM CONFLICT WOULD EVENTUALLY FADE OUT RATHER THAN END BY FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS OR CONFERENCES. HE SAID THAT ONE OF THE BIGGEST FACTORS PROLONGING THE CONFLICT WAS THE APPEARANCE OF DISUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES.

MR. BUNKER, AT A NEWS CONFERENCE ON HIS ARRIVAL, TOLD REPORTERS THE UNITED STATES LOOKED BEYOND THE CURRENT SITUATION TO A TIME OF RECONCILIATION AND PEACE THROUGHOUT ASIA. THE UNITED STATES WOULD REMAIN FRIENDS OF SOUTH VIETNAM TO ASSIST IN CONQUERING HUNGER, DISEASE, ILLITERACY AND SOCIAL INJUSTICE.
