    A 36 HOUR "SIT OUT" ORGANISED BY SINGAPORE'S LEFT-WING BARISAN SOCIALIST PARTY ENDED ON TUESDAY WHEN POLICE ARRESTED 300 DEMONSTRATORS. THE "SIT-OUT" DEMONSTRATION WAS STAGED OPPOSITE CHANGI PRISON. IT WAS IN SUPPORT OF A REPORTED HUNGER STRIKE BY POLITICAL DETAINEES AND AGAINST RECENT LEGISLATION.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED UNDER MAKE-SHIFT SHELTERS AND COOKED FOOD, BOUGHT WITH MONEY GIVEN TO THEM BY PASSING SYMPATHIZERS. THEY REPEATEDLY CHANTED QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

    THE PARTY'S FORMER MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, KOO YOUNG, ADDRESSED THE DEMONSTRATORS OUTSIDE THEN PRISON. AS HE WAS SPEAKING POLICE TOLD THE DEMONSTRATORS TO DISPENSE. WHEN THEY REFUSED THE POLICE ARRESTED MANY DEMONSTRATORS INCLUDING KOO YOUNG AND THE BARISAN SOCIALIST PARTY TREASURER, TAY CHENG KANG, .PUTTING THEM INTO THE PRISON COMPOUND.

    THE POLICE THEN BURNT THE MAKE-SHIFT SHELTERS AND RUBBISH LEFT BY THE DEMONSTRATORS, BEFORE LOADING THOSE ARRESTED INTO POLICE WAGONS.
