  • Description

The only military shows of arms and armaments to be included in may Day parades of countries in the East European Communist block, was provided by east Germany n the parade in East Berlin on Thursday (1 May). The event was boycotted by ambassadors from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) countries based in the eastern sector of the city.

Dozens of tanks belching grey smoke thundered down the Karl marx Allee during the thirty minute display, which also featured contingents of troops, a brass band and an assortment of rockets and heavy artillery.

For seven years, ever since the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, East Germany has been the only Warsaw Pact country to parade its military might on May Day. And each year the Western Allies in west Berlin have lodged a formal protest to the East German Government, on the grounds that military demonstrations breach the de-militarised status imposed on Berlin after World War II.

The parade was watched by the Communist Party leaders, Erich Honecker, the Head of State, President Willi Stoph, and the East German prime Minister, Horst Sindermann.
