INTRODUCTION The World Boxing Council's bantamweight title holder, Carlos Zarate of Mexico, held on to his crown in Mexico City on Saturday (5 February) when he beat Fernando Cabanela of the Philippines.

SYNOPSIS: The referee stopped the fight in the third round of a scheduled 15-round fight. Cabanela was severely cut over the right eye at the end of second round.

The 16,000 spectators in the El Toreo bullring then saw fight doctor Jorge Montes step into the ring to examine the wound, which had caused blood to pour down the challenger's face. The fight was halted for a few minutes, but then Montes ordered the action to continue.

In round three, Zarate launched a furious assault, throwing punches from all angles at Cabanela's head. Until then, the fight had been relatively unexciting.

After the fight there was immediate argument over whether it was Zarate's fist of his head which split Cabanela's right eyebrow. World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman told reporters a re-run of the fight would be viewed on videotape. He said if the film showed clearly that Zarate's head was to blame, the champion could be disqualified.
