  • Description

East Germany reached the finals of the World Soccer Cup for the first time when they emphatically defeated Albania 4 - 1 in the Albanian capital Tirana on Saturday (November 3).

The win brought the East Germans the two points they needed in their final Group Four qualifying match to push Rumania into second place in the group.

The Rumanians who crushed Finland 9-0 last month were one point ahead and had a better goal average than the East Germans before Saturday's match. So a win was essential.

East Germany, an emerging force in world football, took only five minutes to go in front with a fine driving header by Achim Streich. Gjika equalised for Albania 10 minutes later but 10 minutes before the interval Streich scored again to give the East Germans a half time lead.

Wolfram Loewe increased the lead to 3 - 1 in the 62nd minute and Juergen Sparwasser put the issue beyond doubt with an unbeatable shot 12 minutes from the final whistle.

East Germany are the eighth team to make sure of a place at Munich next year. The others are West Germany, the hosts, Brazil, the holders, and Argentina, Uruguay, Scotland, Poland and Italy.
