  • Description

President Jaafar Nimeiri of Sudan had reiterated his belief that it should be possible to convene an Arab Reconciliation Summit, but he has given no reason for his optimism. In a statement on Saturday (May 13) in Cairo after a meeting with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat to discuss prospects for convening such a summit, President Nimeiri said that all indications pointed to the success of the Arab Reconciliation Committee in its mission. President Nimeiri said that after his six-nation Arab tour he was confident of a new era of Arab solidarity.

SYNOPSIS: It was President Nimeiri's third visit to Cairo this month in addition to visiting Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The Sudanese leader had been charged by the 22-member Arab league with reconciling Arab differences following Mr Sadat's peace overtures to Israel and with calling a summit to restore solidarity
President Sadat has offered to resume diplomatic relations with the five Arab countries critical of his peace moves and has qualified his statements that there would not be another war with Israel, by saying it would depend on Premier Menachem Begin of Israel maintaining his present negotiating position.
