  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Foreign Ministers of 11 Arab countries have been meeting in Cairo to discuss a proposed agenda for the first Afro-Arab summit conference which opens in the Egyptian capital on 7 March. Several other agreements have also been reached during the meeting.

SYNOPSIS: During the meeting the ministers, representing member states of the Arab League, agreed on a plan for closer political and economic cooperation with African states. They also agreed on a joint plan for next month's meeting of the Arab-European Dialogue Committee in Tunis, but no details were available on either subject.

Mr. Mahmoud Riad, Arab League Secretary General presented Lebanon's request for an extension of the Arab peace-keeping force's stay in the country. The agreement for the peace-keeping force's presence is due to expire on 26 April, but no further decision was taken by the ministers.

Prior to the meeting Arab oil countries have agreed to continue financial backing to the Arab front-line states opposed to Israel--Egypt, Syria and Jordan--and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain reached this agreement.

Arab sources believe that during this year the front-line states will receive 1.3 billion dollars between them.

But the Tunisian Foreign Minister, Habib Chatti, chairman of the meeting, told reporters that before the summit conference in March the Palestinians must decide exactly what they want.
