Background: EUROPE'S RICHEST HORSE RACE -- THE GBP79,500 PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE -- WAS WON IN PARIS TODAY (SUNDAY) BY THE ITALIAN HORSE PRINCE ROYAL II.

HE WON BY THREE-QUARTERS OF A LENGTH FROM THE IRISH CHAMPION SANTA CLAUS, WITH THE FILLY LA BAMBA A HEAD AWAY IN THIRD PLACE. THERE WERE 22 RUNNERS IN THE RACE, RUN OVER ONE-AND-A-HALF MILES AT THE LONGCHAMP COURSE.

THE RACE WAS RUN IN IDEAL WEATHER, WITH BIG CROWDS. AS AT RACING CLASSICS THE WORLD OVER, FASHION-CONSCIOUS WOMEN WERE OUT IN FORCE.

FROM THE MOMENT THE FIELD LEFT THE STARTING STALLS, A CRACKING PACE WAS SET. INTO THE FINAL STRAIGHT, PRINCE ROYAL TOOK OVER THE RUNNING TO THE FINISH -- DESPITE PRESSURE ON THE OUTSIDE FROM SANTA CLAUS, WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S ENGLISH AND IRISH DERBY CLASSICS, AND A LATE CHALLENGE FROM LA BAMBA IN THE MIDDLE.

PRINCE ROYAL -- OWNED BY CALIFORNIAN RANCHER REX ELLSWORTH -- WAS RIDDEN BY NINE-TIMES CHAMPION FRENCH JOCKEY ROGER POINCELET. HE WON AT ODDS OF NEARLY 16 TO 1.

FOURTH WAS TIMMY LAD, RIDDEN BY SOUTH AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY PAT GLENNON, NOW RIDING IN IRELAND. THE FAVOURITE, LE FABULEUX, OF FRANCE, FINISHED FOURTEENTH.
