  • Description

Delegates from 15 countries have been meeting in Algeria to help the re-unification of Korea. Their two-day meeting, which began on Saturday, (25 June) is a result of a world conference for the support of the Korean people which took place in Brussels last February.

SYNOPSIS: The group that evolved from the Brussels meeting is the International Committee of Liaison for the Independent Re-unification of Korea. A coordinator of the Algerian National Liberation Front, Mohamed Messaadia, opened the conference.

All told, there were about 50 representatives-either delegates from outside the country or diplomats within Algeria. The Republic of Korea's economy, severely disrupted by the Korean war, has since recovered through the United Nations and the United States. During 1973 there was rapid industrial expansion but since then South Korea has been hit by the oil crisis and worldwide inflation. North Korea has not been as severely hit by the oil crisis but it is lagging in the industrial field. There were talks between North and South Korea six years ago for the first time when it was decided to re-unite peacefully.

The current committee meeting has studied redevelopment in Korea since the Brussels conference and made preparations for the second world conference.
