  • Description

Italian Opera Singer Maria Callas who created a furore in Rome, recently, by refusing to complete a performance at the re-opening of the Opera House, was besieged by reporters and photographers when she arrived at Orly Airport, Paris.

She was stopping off in Paris on her trip from Milan to Chicago, U.S.A. Among the dozens of people who thronged the runway and reception halls, was French film actor, Jess Claude Pascal. He had a cordial greeting for the temperamental singer.

Newspapers all over the world carried the story of Miss Callas's refusal to sing the second act of 'Norma' during the re-opening of the Rome Opera House - despite the fact that Italian President Groschi was in the audience. the trouble arose when some members of the audience gave her a cool reception.

An understudy took over the part and continued in subsequent performances. One American newspaper later summed up Italian opera-lovers' reactions to the events:- 'Callas cools off...but Rome still burns!'.
