  • Description

A delegation of Canadian World War II veterans - headed by Minister of Veteran Affairs Arthur Laing - attended a ceremony today (Saturday) commemorating the Allied landings at Dieppe of August 19, 1942.

The Dieppe landings were conceived as a reconnaissance operation, but, in effect, they proved valuable training for future successful landings on well-defended coasts. The main assault was carried out by a force of some 7,000 men, the majority of them Canadians. About half was either killed or captured. The first onslaught was carried out by a preparatory force of commandos, operating in a dual flank move. The right-hand thrust reached the French coast successfully and was able to dismantle the German guns along that sector; but the left-hand thrust ran into a German flotills and was unable to make a successful landing. They were followed by the main assault.

An Allied air "umbrella" of about 1,000 fighters and bombers took a heavy toll of German defences, while offering protection to the invading forces. Tanks were used as well, but they were seriously obstructed by the strong sea well along the coast.

During the commemorative ceremony today, fourteen Canadian survivors of the operation, accompanied Mr. Laing as he placed a wreath at the base of the monument erected in Diepps in memory of those fallen in 1942.
