Background: Although United States involvement in anti-guerrilla operations in Southeast Asia is relatively new...the U-S has been in the business of training troops to fight against guerrillas for many years.

These troops are the so-called "Special Forces"...from Fort Bragg, North Carolina...organized into small, multiple-purpose detachments...geared to train, organize, supply and direct indigenous forces against insurgent attacks. The troops...most of them qualified parachutists familiar with at least one foreign language...are also specialists in weapons, demolitions, basic medical skills, intelligence and communications.

The Special Forces recently participated in training troops from Fort Lewis, Washington, in Operation Sherwood Forest...held at Olympic National Rain Forest in the Northwest part of the United States.

They demonstrated parachuting from helicopters...and a new maneuver...sliding down at rope from a helicopter. The trainees learn how to cross a swiftly-running stream, how to hack through dense jungle, tree-climbing for observation, how to blow up a bridge, how to live off the land...by picking berries and fishing...all the skills needed to carry on guerrilla and counter-guerrilla activities.
