Background: THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS AND TOURISTS GATHERED ON SUNDAY MORNING IN THE SQUARE OUTSIDE THE SUMMER RESIDENCE OF POPE PAUL AT CASTEL GANDOLFO.

THEY HAD COME TO RECEIVE THE PAPAL BLESSING AND ALSO TO HEAR THE POPE GIVE AN ADDRESS ON THE APOLLO II MOON MISSION.

POPE WAS SPEAKING FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A WEEK ON THE SPACE FLIGHT. HE PRAISED MAN'S EFFORTS IN SPACE-FLIGHT, BUT SAID THAT THE WORLD SHOULD GUARD AGAINST THE DANGER OF COMING TO WORSHIP TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS ABOVE ALL ELSE.

SPEAKING IN LATIN, HE TOLD THE CROWD THAT, WITH FOUR WARS IN VIETNAM, IN AFRICA, IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AND BETWEEN HONDURAS AND SAN SALVADOR - STILL RAGING AS THE MOON-FLIGHT TAKES PLACE, THERE WERE STILL MANY PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED ON EARTH. MAN MUST LEARN TO CONQUER HIMSELF BEFORE HE TRIED TO CONQUER SPACE.

DURING THE CEREMONY, THE POPE GAVE THE CROWD THE APOSTOLIC BLESSING, AND READ OUT TWO SHORT ADDRESSES OF WELCOME IN FRENCH AND ENGLISH.

OUTSIDE THE PALACE, SPACE-MANIA HAD CAUGHT THE POPULATION OF THIS QUIET LAKESIDE TOWN. STREETS WERE EMPTY, AND SHUTTERED SHOPS DISPLAYED POSTERS ANNOUNCING 'CLOSED TO SEE THE MOON-WALK'.
