Background: Four ships of the United States Sixth Fleet, headed by the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, arrived in the Israeli harbour of Haifa on Thursday (7 February). the United States Navy have said this is a long-scheduled stop-over to give the crews some rest and recreation. The declined to reveal their next port of call.
SYNOPSIS: The USS Forrestal is one of two aircraft carriers in the U.S. Sixth Fleet's force of thirty-five ships, two hundred planes and twenty-three-thousand men. The other carrier, the USS independence, is bigger and newer, carrying eighty-four attack aircraft. The Forrestal and the other ships of the Sixth Fleet, from what the U.S. Navy calls "an unending watch".
Another of the ships in port is the USS Connole, one of two guided missile frigates, along with USS Paul, on the Rest Stop. The fleet is charged with helping to ensure the security and stability of the busy Mediterranean sea lanes, and bordering democracies depending on seaboard trade.
The supply ship Savannah when at sea is vital to the ships it serves, carrying fuel, food and other necessities for the crew.
The Fleet is at sea about to-thirds of the time on manoeuvres or NATO exercise so the crew are ready for the change of pace.
