    THEN TURNING TO THE ROLE OF MALTA IN WORLD AFFAIRS, THE DUKE READ:
    THERE WERE DISTURBANCES IN THE SQUARE OUTSIDE THE BUILDING AS SHOUTING LABOUR PARTY SUPPORTERS CLASHED WITH GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS IN THE 20,000-STRONG CROWD. STRONG FORCES OF POLICE SEVERAL TIMES BROKE UP CHANTING, BOOING LABOUR SUPPORTERS, FORCING THEM DOWN SIDE STREETS. SHOES AND STONES WERE THROWN AT THE POLICE DURING THE SKIRMISHES, AND ONE MAN WAS ARRESTED..
