    UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL U THANT TODAY (THURSDAY) HELD TALKS IN GENEVA WITH MIDDLE EAST PEACE ENVOY DR. GUNNAR JARRING. AFTER THE MEETING, MR. U THANT TOLD REPORTERS THAT DR. JARRING HAD AGREED TO RETURN TO NEW YORK NEXT MONTH FOR FURTHER TALKS ON THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT. HE ADDED THAT THEY HAD BOTH AGREED THAT "ALTHOUGH THERE IS AT PRESENT NO REAL BASIS FOR DR. JARRING'S IMMEDIATE RETURN TO NEW YORK, IT WILL BE DESIRABLE FOR HIM TO BE IN NEW YORK ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF MAY FOR A FURTHER EXCHANGE OF VIEWS BETWEEN HIM AND ME."
    THE SECRETARY GENERAL WAS ALSO ASKED IF HE CONSIDERED PROSPECTS FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST LIKELY TO IMPROVE DURING THE NEXT FEW WEEKS - HE REPLIED: "NOW IS THE MOMENT FOR THE PARTIES TO MOVE TOWARDS FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION OF NOVEMBER 1967. (BUT) TIME IS NOT ON THE SIDE OF PEACE."
    ALTHOUGH DR. JARRING IS NOT DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN ANY TALKS CONNECTED WITH THE REOPENING OF THE SUEZ CANAL, MR. U THANT SAID THAT THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HAD RECENTLY INFORMED HIM THAT OF U.S. STATE SECRETARY WILLIAM ROGERS' FORTHCOMING MIDDLE EAST TOUR AND THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE REOPENING OF THE CANAL WERE PRIMARILY AIMED AT HELPING DR. JARRING IN HIS SEARCH FOR AN OVERALL PEACE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE U.N. RESOLUTION.

    DR. JARRING IS THE SWEDISH AMBASSADOR TO MOSCOW.
