  • Description

THE OLDEST SERVING PRISONER IN ANY AMERICAN PENAL INSTITUTION MAY, THIS WEEK, BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER THE OUTSIDE WORLD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 64-YEARS.HE IS RICHARD HONECK, WHO ENTERED PRISON IN NOVEMBER, 1899, SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR A FATAL STABBING IN CHICAGO.

NOW 84-YEARS-OLD, HIS ONLY GLIMPSE OF THE WORLD BEYOND HIS PRISON BARS CAME WHEN HE WAS TRANSFERED TO MENARD STATE PRISON, IN ILLINOIS, FROM ANOTHER GAOL.

SINCE 1911, HONECK HAS LIVED AN EXEMPLARY LIFE SPENDING HIS SPARE TIME READING IN HIS CELL, AND THE WORKING DAY IN THE PRISON KITCHEN AT A BREAD SLICING MACHINE.HIS ONLY TROUBLE WITH PRISON AUTHORITIES OCCURRED IN 1911, WHEN HE OBJECTED TO RELIGIOUS LITERATURE BEING PLACED IN HIS CELL; WHEN THE AUTHORITIES CONTINUED TO SUPPLY HIM WITH SCRIPTURES AND TRACTS HE TRIED TO STAB A GUARD, AND WOUNDED THE MAN SLIGHTLY.

A RECENT NEWS STORY BROUGHT HIM OFFERS OF MONEY, MARRIAGE AND A HOME, AND 3-THOUSAND LETTERS; THE FIRST HE HAD RECEIVED SINCE 1904.NOW THE ILLINOIS PAROLE BOARD WILL MEET HIM IN VIEW OF AN OFFER BY A NIECE IN CALIFORNIA TO TAKE HIM INTO HER HOME.

IF THEY DO GIVE HIM HIS FREEDOM, RICHARD HONECK WILL BE A FREE MAN NEXT JANUARY - AFTER SPENDING MORE THAN THREE-QUARTERS OF HIS LIFE BEHIND BARS.
