  • Description

On the morning of Independence Day for the new Congo Republic, June 30, King Baudouin of Belgium and President Kasavubu, head of the new state, attended a Te Deum - thanksgiving mass - in the Cathedral of Notre Dame du Congo, in the African quarter of Leopoldville.

Also at the service were several leaders from bordering African states including President Fulbert Youlou of the French Congo Republic. A crowd of Africans standing outside the cathedral cheered when the King left after the service followed by diplomats and senior army officers.

Later, in a ceremony at the Parliament Building, King Baudouin proclaimed independence for the Congo ruled by Belgium for the past 80 years.
