  • Description

Whether or not heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali is remembered as the greatest fighter the ring has ever known, it seems likely he'll be remembered as the most quotable and colourful performer in ring history.

As he trained on Friday (26 September) for his upcoming defence against Joe Frazier, he showed all the flamboyance and publicity consciousness that has marked his tumultous carrer.

Accompanied by a police escort with sirens blaring, Ali turned up at his training camp in the Folk Art Theatre in Manila to a crowd of onlookers and newsmen and quipped that if he gave the word, his fans in Manila would "bump off" Joe Frazier.

In training he dazzled fans with his hardhitting and fast hitting exhibitions on the heavy and speed punching bags, then danced as his sparring partner took wild swipes at him, hardly landing a blow.

Finally, he haunched over a tape player and listened to a record made by frazier and joked about Frazier being "real good". Then he played a recording of his own.

He ended up singing to accompany himself and admitted his record was "pretty good".

It was a typical performance by Ali, the kind of antic that has helped build his fight audiences into the millions making a fortune for him and his rivals each time he puts his title on the line.

This time he's been guaranteed a 4.5 million u.s. dollar (L2.3 million sterling) purse.Frazier will take home 2.5 million U.S. dollars (L 1.2 million sterling).
