  • Description

Cambodian troops who have been trained in South Vietnam returned by troop ship to Phnom Penh on Wednesday (12 August).

A South Vietnamese navy LST carried the Cambodian soldiers up the Mekong River to the Capital City. Waiting at the quayside were friends and relatives of the men.

The troops were trained in the Central Highlands areas of South Vietnam at Pleiku and in their five weeks course were taught to handle modern equipment. Among the weapons used by Cambodian forces are communist AK 47 rifles.

The soldiers will almost immediately be used in the defence of Cambodia against the pro-Sihanouk forces who have reached within several miles of Phnom Penh in recent armed probes.

With the Cambodian soldiers are South Vietnamese advisors who have supervised the transportation of the soldiers to Phnom Penh.
