Background: Ghanaian students, waving anti-apartheid banners, were among the crowd at Accra Airport to welcome Dr. Kurt Waldheim, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who arrived in the West African nation for a two-day visit on Monday (25 February).

Dr. Waldheim, on a 13-nation tour, was greeted by Major Kwame Baah, the National Redemption Council's Commissioner for Foreign Affairs. During his 48-hour stay in Ghana, the United Nations leader had a busy schedule, including a call on the Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, and a visit to the gianthydro-electric project at Akosombo, 63 miles (100 kms) north-east of the capital.

One item on Dr. Waldheim's agenda for Monday was a visit to the Accra Community Centre, where he addressed a meeting of the Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA). He was welcomed to the gathering by the Patron of the organisation, Mr. Ben Kuma. Mr. Kuma called on the United nations to put pressure on "Portugal and her allies of NATO to renounce their anti-human. and anti-UN, policies and leave Mozambique and Angola, particularly as Africa is not, and can never be, an extension of Europe."
At the end of his visit, Dr. Waldhiem blamed the member states of the United Nations for failing to solve the problems of Southern Africa. He told an airport news conference that the declaration of "independence" by Guinea-Bissau (Portuguese Guinea) was an important breakthrough in the national liberation struggle.
