  • Description

Opening the 1970 Social Sciences Conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday (Monday), Tanzanian Second Vice-President Rashidi Kawawa warned African nations that they could only achieve real progress and independence through their own efforts.

Addressing an audience of 300 delegates from the Universities of East Africa, Mr Kawawa said that African nations had to control their own development. Otherwise, they risked being changed by outside forces who might exploit the continent's resources without regard to interests of African countries.

Mr Kawawa added that the tree nations of the East African community -- Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania -- had already set an example of co-operation. "Our three countries need to work together if we are all to make the kind of economic and social progress out peoples need," he added.
