SYNOPSIS: The streets of Scissons, in northeastern France, were quiet on Monday. The town was in mourning following Friday's rail disaster in the nearby tunnel at Vierzy where as many as 100 passengers were feared to have lost their lives after two trains had collided with a rock fall.

A special funeral service for the victims was hold on Monday at Seissons Cathedral.

The victims had been brought earlier from Saint Legor where they had been lying following identification.

At this stage only 63 bodies had been recovered from the wreckage of the smashed trains.

After the memorial service attended by hundreds of relatives and other mourners, each coffin was borne outside by French servicemen.

A fleet of army hearses waited to deliver the coffins for private burial.

Among mourners at the Cathedral service was M. Jean Chamant, Transport Minister.
