Background: General Charles de Gaulle, first President of the Fifth Republic of France, made one of his rare social appearances at the 150th. anniversary gala of the St. Cyr Military Academy. Feb 1. In the ornate Napoleon III ballroom of the 100-year-old Hotel Continental, along with hundreds of 'old boys' of St. Cyr, De Gaulle wearing the new dress uniform of high ranking French officers, sang traditional Academy songs. He was at the military school from 1909 to 1912.
A detachment of the Republic Guard played the Marseillaise and saluted as the President and Madame de Gaulle arrived and were greeted by Premier Debre.
Proceeds from this charity ball will be distributed among widows and orphans of St. Cyr graduates killed in battle.
