THE FORMER FRENCH PRIME MINISTER, GEORGE BIDAULT, ANNOUNCED TONIGHT (SUNDAY) HE WOULD NOT COMPETE IN THE FORTHCOMING GENERAL ELECTIONS IN FRANCE.

  • Description

HOTEL; M. BIDAULT SPEAKING (SOUND ON FILM).

TRANSCRIPT: BIDAULT: (ENGLISH TRANSLATION) I HOLE THAT MY RETURN TO FRANCE WILL BE THE SIGN OF A TOTAL AMNESTY AND A RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE RIGHTS OF ALL THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE SAME CAUSE AS MYSELF. MY PRESENCE HERE IS A DEMONSTRATION THAT THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON THAT I CAN BE FREE WHILE OTHERS ARE NOT (APPLAUSE). IN ALL THE DISTRICTS WHERE THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE THAN GAULLISTS AND COMMUNISTS COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE WHO IS NEITHER ONE NOR THE OTHER, A CENTRALIST, IF THERE IS ONE, A SOCIALIST OR A MEMBER OF THE LEFTWING FEDERATION. I DON'T THINK IF I LISTEN TO MY CONSCIENCE IT WOULD BE RIGHT TO ASK YOU TO VOTE ON THE PRESENT STATE OF FRANCE FOR A COMMUNIST. I DON'T THINK IT RIGHT TO VOTE FOR A GAULLIST MEMBER FOR THE SAME REASON AND I SHALL TELL YOU WHY IT IS BECAUSE I THINK THAT THE THINGS YOU HAVE SEEN, AND I HAVE SEEN ONLY THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS AND WHAT I HAVE READ IN NEWSPAPERS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THAT GAULLISM IS NOT A SHIELD AGAINST COMMUNISM. IT IS DURING DE GAULLE'S PRESENCE WITH ALL HIS POWERS THAT WE HAVE SEEN THE RED AND BLACK FLAGS IN THE STREETS. FOR THIS REASON I SAY GAULLISM IS NOT THE ALTERATIVE TO COMMUNISM. SO I SAY BE ELECTIVE IN YOUR CHOICE. THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE CHOICE ARE COMMUNISTS AND I MUST SAY, GAULLISTS. IN THE SECOND BALLOT IF YOU HAVE ONLY THE CHOICE BETWEEN THE TWO, I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH YOUR CONSCIENCE TO TELL YOU WHICH IS THE LEAST OF THE TWO DEVILS. BUT DURING THE FIRST BALLOT DO NOT VOTE FOR CANDIDATES OF EITHER OF THESE PARTIES.
