The former chief of Polish Broadcasting Maciej Szczepanski went on trial in Warsaw on Tuesday (5 January). The charges involve some 217 million zlotys (about seven million dollars at the former official exchange rate). Mr. Szczepanski, previously a close associate of deposed community party chief Edward Gierek is accused of misappropriating state property, accepting bribes from foreign suppliers and causing losses of 212 million zlotys (6.8 million dollars) through non-fulfilment of duties and exceeding his authority. Four other top broadcasting officials are standing trial with him on related charges. The trial is receiving wide publicity from the authorities.
