  • Description

A HARD GAME TODAY UNDER A BLAZING SUN IN THE THIRD ROUND OF THE WIMBLEDON LAWN TENNIS MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. THE FOURTH-SEEDED RAFAEL OSUNA FROM MEXICO FACED RON HOLMBERG OF THE UNITED STATES IN ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR MATCHES SEEN ON THE CENTRE COURT THIS YEAR.

THE GAME LASTED FOR NINETY MINUTES AND WAS DOMINATED BY DAZZLING SAVES BY THE MEXICAN WHO SEEMED TO ANTICIPATE HOLMBERG'S SHOTS WITH UNNERVING ACCURACY. DESPITE HIS SPEED AND LIGHTNESS OF FOOT THE MEXICAN LOST THE THIRD SET -- THE FIRST SET HE HAS LOST IN EITHER THE SINGLES OR DOUBLES MATCHES IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS SO FAR.

HOLMBERG'S SKILL LAY IN HIS SERVICE WHICH WAS USUALLY UNERRINGLY ACCURATE, AND HIS GROUND SHOTS. DESPITE HIS MUSCULAR APPEARANCE THE AMERICAN MOVED WITH GREAT SPEED AND FOR MOST OF THE GAME WAS ABLE TO MATCH OSUNA'S BRILLIANCE.

IN THE FINAL SET HOLMBERG SHOWED SIGNS OF TIREDNESS AS HE TRIED TO KEEP UP WITH THE STILL VIGOROUS OSUNA. IT WAS HOWEVER TO NO AVAIL AND OSUNA WON THE SET AND THE MATCH, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
AMONG TODAY'S SPECTATORS -- PRINCESS MARINA OF KENT.
