  • Description

The twelfth anniversary of the founding of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) - the ruling party of Tanzania - was celebrated in Dar-Es-Salaam yesterday (Thursday) with a procession and mass rally.

The anniversary celebrations traditionally features the arrival of the freedom torch, brought by young Tanzanian runners from the birthplace of President Nyerere at Butima. On arrival in Das-Es-Salaam the torch heads a great procession to the Jangwani playing field where it is ceremoniously handed to the President. Yesterday the procession was a mile (1.6km) long.

Known in Tanzania as "saba saba day" the anniversary celebrates the history of TANU from July 7, 1954, when the party took over the old Tanganyika African Association with President Nyerere at its head.

Yesterday's celebrations were attended by over 40,000 people who heard speeches from the President, Vice-President, Rashidi Kawawa and First Vice-President Abadi Karume.
