  • Description

THROUGHOUT ALGERIA, SIX MILLION PEOPLE WENT TO THE POLLS TODAY TO ELECT THE SECOND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE TWO-YEAR-OLD REPUBLIC.

THEY VOTED FOR A SINGLE LIST OF 138 CANDIDATES FOR THE 138-SEAT ASSEMBLY - 58 SEATS FEWER THAN THE FIRST ASSEMBLY ELECTED SHORTLY AFTER THE COUNTRY ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE. THE LIST WAS PROPOSED BY THE RULING F.L.N. (NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT) PARTY, AND IS UNOPPOSED.

ABOUT 50 OF THE MEMBERS OF THE OLD ASSEMBLY ARE IN THE LIST OF CANDIDATES FOR THE NEW ASSEMBLY. AMONG SEATS EL ??? ARE 17 PREVIOUSLY HELD BY REPRESENTATIVES OF FRENCH AND OTHER EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES IN ALGIERS.

PRESIDENT BEN BELLA IS ON THE LIST FOR THE ORAN CONSTITUENCY, IN WESTERN ALGERIA. MANY MEMBERS OF THE CABINET ARE ALSO ON THE LIST.

THE F.L.N. HAS CONCENTRATED ITS EFFORT ON GETTING AS BIG VOTE. SPEAKERS AT MEETINGS EXPLANATION, "BANNERS IN THE STREETS AND POSTERS HAVE ALL URGED THE PEOPLE TO "VOTE EN MASSE", BUT THE UNDERGROUND "COUNTER REVOLUTION" HAS CALLED FOR A BOYCOTT OF THE ELECTIONS.

THE F.L.N. HAS URGED THAT, WITH THEIR VOTES, THE PEOPLES WILL, AMONG OTHER THINGS, "CONTRIBUTE TO THE ROUT OF THE COUNTER REVOLUTION IN THE COUNTRY AND TO AGRARIAN AND COMMUNAL REFORM."
