    ANOTHER PROTEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA, THIS TIME IN DAR ES SALAAM. CROWDS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE TANGANYIKAN CAPITAL, DEMANDING THE RELEASE OF POLITICAL DETAINEES IN SOUTH AFRICA.

    THE BANNER-WAVING PROCESSION WAS LED BY MR. HEDEBE, A LEADING OFFICIAL OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS IN SOUTH AFRICA. THE MARCH, WHICH TOOK PLACE IN POURING RAIN, BEGAN AT THE CONGRESS OFFICE.

    ONLOOKERS JOINED THE PROCESSION AS IT MADE ITS WAY TO THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE RULING TANGANYIKAN AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION. THERE, MR. HEDEBE WAS JOINED BY A TANU OFFICIAL IN A "PATRIOTIC DANCE" WHILE THE CROWD SANG SONGS "TO THE HEALTH OF TANGANYIKA'S PRESIDENT NYERERE".

    (MOST OF SOUTH AFRICA'S POLITICAL DETAINEES HAVE BEEN HELD UNDER THE 90-DAY DETENTION LAW - OTHERS UNDER THE SUPPRESSION OF COMMUNISM ACT. BY LAST DECEMBER, 594 HAD BEEN DETAINED. MANY OF THEM HAVE SINCE BEEN RELEASED, BUT IT IS REPORTED THAT SINCE JANUARY ARRESTS HAVE BEEN TAKING PLACE AT ABOUT ONE A DAY.)
