SYNOPSIS: Connors was kept busy playing defensively against Nastase's booming serves. At one stage he appeared to be suffering from a pulled shoulder muscle. Nastase found it easy to take points off the young American.

Connors got to the final by beating Adriano Panatta of Italy in a hard-fought two-and-a-half-hour match while Nastase beat Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg of Sweden. Nastase taking this point against Connors.
Nastase going for the kill -- match point.
From the start of the game, Nastase had gone in aggressively - racing ahead to a three-nil lead before Connors could settle. Connors then held his service but Nastase reeled off five games to take the first set and a two-nil lead in the second. Connors had tried to fight back but could find no answer to Nastase's passing shots. The Rumanian picked up a trophy, and 37,000 U.S. dollars (GBP 17,000 sterling). In a preliminary match between Connors and Nastase the previous day, which had no effect on the final because they'd both already qualified for it, Connors conceded the match, complaining of a strained shoulder muscle. In the match for third place, Borg had a walkover when Pannata scratched because of a painful elbow.
