  • Description

The West German and Czechoslovakian football teams met in a friendly match in Hannover's Lower Saxony Football stadium on Wednesday (17 November).

SYNOPSIS: West Germany were looking to revenge their loss to Czechoslovakia in the final of the European championships last summer. That match finished two-all at full time, and the Czechoslovakians won on penalties.

West Germany did most of the attacking in the first half and almost scored several times against a Czech side weakened by the withdrawal of six regular players through injury or illness.

West Germany attack again and the ball goes out of play off a Czech defender.

From the resulting corner, Heinz Flohe hit the ball into the net, a goal that delighted the crowd of more than 60,000 people. It was the natural side's one-thousandth goal since it was formed in 1908. West Germany led one-nil, after 17 minutes.

A quarter of an hour later the home side increased its lead when Erich Beer scored another goal with an 18-yard (16 metre) shot that beat the Czech goalkeeper, Michalik.

The home side dominated the first half, but the Czechs came back strongly in the second half to press the West German defence. However the visitors failed to score. Final score -- West Germany, two, Czechoslovakia, nil -- for their first defeat in 24 games.
