    A new 253,000-ton tanker, the longest ship in the world according to the Shipping Register of Lloyds in London, has been launched in Rotterdam.

    Mrs R.A. Baze, wife of the Vice-President of the Standard Oil Company, New Jersey, named the ship "Esso Europoort" during a ceremony at the verolme Shipyard.

    Also at the launch was Mr. Verolme, founder of the Dutch yard, which is to build two more of these giant tankers for Esso.

    "Esso Europoort" is I,141 feet I inch in overall length, (347.80). This is just a few inches longer than what were previously the world's longest ships, the tankers "Universe Ireland" and "Universe Kuwait."
    The new tanker was built for the Dutch Esso company Antillen Ltd.
