  • Description

A basketball team from the People's Republic of China began a tour of the United Kingdom and Europe on Wednesday (10 November) when they narrowly defeated a London League team at Picketts Lock, London.

SYNOPSIS: Towards the end of the match the London team were in the lead by 68 points to 65. But the Chinese were soon to score twice within a matter of seconds as the play swept into the London team's sector.

That was the first of the two scores that put the Chinese into the lead. It is 28 years since a basketball team from China last visited Britain, although table tennis teams from the Republic were in the country during the famous period of "ping-pong" diplomacy between China and the Western world.

This second score gave China 70 points against London's 68. But the game wasn't over yet.

The home team had soon made up the discrepancy of two points, but in the meantime the Chinese had scored again and had also been awarded a penalty point. But the London team soon scored once more, and it was clear that they were not to be subdued by the high reputation of the Chinese that had reached the capital ahead of the squad.

Int he first half the Chinese had been rather slow to find their usual touch and speed, and some experts felt that they had not had enough time to settle down after their long plane journey.

However, in the second half they pulled out all the stops and just snipped victory by one point -- scoring 75 to London's 74.
