  • Description

More than 300 students were arrested in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening (11 September) after police and security forces used tear gas to break up a student demonstration.

The student group had planned to march to Congress to protest against a bomb blast which last Saturday killed the baby son of the left wing Rector of Buenos aires University, Dr Raul Laguzzi.

Doctor Laguzzi has blamed right-wing extremist for the explosion, and alleged that a police guard on his home was withdrawn just before the bomb was planted.

More than 2,000 students defied the ban on the demonstration and faced heavily-armed police, supported by water cannon and Saracen armoured cars.

There has been increasing tension at Buenos Aires University with all 11 faculties of the university occupied by left-wing students since 13 August in support of Dr. Laguzzi and against any attempt to have him replaced by an orthodox Peronist.

The decision of the Montoneres, the young left-wing of the Peronist movement to go underground has caused confusion among students. Many support the Montoneres, but doubt the wisdom of re-embarking on a strategy of armed struggle.

The Government of President Maria Estela Paren is now said to be considering moves to restore "normality" to the faculties, police sources say.
