Following Egyptian President Sadat's recent visit there has been a growing market in Israel for all sorts of memorabilia. Among the items are flags and souvenir T-shirts; and as well as that one of the country's largest jewellery manufacturers Platin, is receiving demands for a special peace medal launched to commemorate the historic occasion.
SYNOPSIS: MANUFACTURER: "We make just jewellery, but we were so enthusiastic when we heard about the Sadat visit, so we decided to make some gesture to the public, to the President, and to manufacture some medals, manufacture the medal as something nice, something to express our feelings. There was such a demand for the coin so we have manufactured about 10,000 pieces of them now and requests are still coming, but we are going to manufacture another 10,000 in a very short time. And, you know, it's very nice, that a gesture that came from our heart and one of the most successful businesses that we have ever had in Platin."
The medal features President Sadat on one side with Israeli Prime Minister Begin on the other, and has the word 'PEACE' embossed in English, Hebrew and Arabic.
The first edition, limited to 200, was completed just as President Sadat's aircraft touched down on Israeli soil. It took just 72 hours to make. Another industry to receive a boost from the visit has been the flag makers.
Even the clothing industry has found a way of making money out of the visit.
