    WORK IS UNDER WAY ON CONSTRUCTION OF A CABLE CAR LINK TO THE SUMMIT OF WEST GERMANY'S HIGHEST PEAK, 9725-FT. MOUNT ZUGSPITZE, AMID THE SNOW-CAPPED HEIGHTS OF THE BAVARIAN ALPS. THE CABLE WILL STRETCH FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP TO A GROUND STATION 6,300 FEET BELOW AT EIBSEE. TWO GIANT PYLONS WILL SUPPORT THE CABLE BETWEEN BOTH POINTS.

    FIRST STAGE OF THE PROJECT, COSTING IN ALL ABOUT GBP250,000, IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION BY NEXT APRIL. THE CABLE LINK WILL OPERATE TWO CABIN CARS, CAPABLE OF HOISTING 300 PASSENGERS AN HOUR.

    AT PRESENT A COG-WHEEL RAILWAY, BUILT IN 1930, OPERATES FROM THE VALLEY STATION OF GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN TO SCHNEEFERNERHAUS NEAR THE SUMMIT, WINDING ITS WAY 11 MILES THROUGH MOUNTAIN SCENERY. THE ZUGSPITZE SUMMIT COMMANDS BREATHTAKING VIEWS OF THE ALPINE PEAKS OF GERMANY, AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND AND ITALY.
