  • Description

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Subah Al-Salem Al-Subah visited the Al-Subah Hospital in Kuwait on Wednesday (21 march) to talk to the four border policemen wounded during the skirmish on the frontier with Iraq.

During his brief visit, the Amir spoke to doctors and wished the injured men a speedy recovery.

According to Kuwaiti sources, the policemen were wounded and several others were missing early on Tuesday morning (20 March) after an attack by Iraqi soldiers on the border-post of Al-Sameta. Another post was reportedly shelled by Iraqi forces.

Iraq has denied the reports and claimed that the Kuwaitis first opened fire on Iraqi forces on exercise inside Iraq's 200 mile (320 km) border with Kuwait.

The clash came as a surprise, for although the two countries have long been at odds over border limits -- Iraq claimed sovereignty over Kuwait and threatened to invade it in 1961 -- tension has died down in recent years and an Iraqi delegation was due here soon to talk about the border disputes.

SYNOPSIS: As the Amir discussed the wounded men's injuries with doctors, and was assured that they were not serious, a statement was being issued in Baghdad disclaiming responsibility for the incident. The Iraqi statement claimed that it was the Kuwaiti patrol that had fired first, wounding two Iraqi soldiers on exercise inside Iraq's border. As the dispute continued, Arab leaders appealed to both countries for calm and a peaceful solution. United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim announced that he was willing to travel to both countries to mediate for peace.

After speaking to the wounded men and wishing them a speedy recovery, the Amir left the hospital to confer with his Ministers about the crisis.
