  • Description

In Lebanon, a group of women have staged a demonstration against the kidnapping of Fathi Yakan, Secretary General of the right-wing Islamic Brotherhood -- or Jama Islamiah. Members of the Islamic Brotherhood have blamed "elements outside Lebanon" for the kidnapping.

SYNOPSIS: About three hundred women took part in the demonstration, at the Lebanese town of Tripoli on Tuesday (30 October). The Islamic Brotherhood is ultra-conservative and dominated by Sunni Moslems. It was founded in Egypt in 1928 to combat what it considered corrupt Western influences on orthodox Islam. In recent months, there have ben violent clashes in neighbouring Syria between the Sunnis and their rival Alawites.

But this protest by women members of the Islamic Brotherhood went off peacefully. Early in August, at least forty people died in clashes between Alawite and Sunni Moslems in the Syrian port city of Latakia. this demonstration was headed by the wife of the kidnapped Secretary General. She asked the Municipal Governor in Tripoli to take action against those responsible for the kidnapping of her husband.

Leaders of the Brotherhood said "elements from outside" Lebanon were responsible for the kidnapping. They claimed the idea behind the action was to spread the religious strife in Syria to North Lebanon.
