  • Description

A new Argentine Army commander -- who has close links with the right wing of Argentina's ruling Peronist movement -- formally took over in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (14 May) following the enforced retirement of his predecessor.

The new commander, Lieutenant General Alberto Numa Laplane, is (at 50) the Argentine Army's youngest General.

The day after his appointment, General Laplane said the struggle against left-wing guerrillas in Northern Tucuman Province of Argentina was the Army's number one task.

Laplane's predessor -- General Leandro Anaya -- retired from active duty at the request of Argentine Defence Minister Mario Savino.

General Anaya cited "differences of opinion" for the change. Military sources said he had complained about failures to improve living conditions in Tucuman.

In a brief statement, Anaya confirmed that he had differences of opinion with Senor Savino during a meeting between them and President "Isabelita" Peron on 25 April. General Anaya frequently expressed the Army's support for institutional order since his appointment by the late President Juan Peron in 1973. The term of his command was marked by his efforts to take the Argentine army out of politics.

The new Army chief is a close associate of some of Senora Peron's advisers ... particularly Jose Lopez Riga, her private secretary and Social Welfare Minister, and Raul Lastirix, who as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies is next in line for the Presidency.
