    United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, wound up his latest Middle $East tour on Friday night (8 November) with a brief visit to the Tunisian capital, Tunis.

    And according to American officials, Dr. Kissinger was confident some progress had been made towards a Middle East solution.

    The officials said Dr. Kissinger believed tension in the area had been reduced and the possibility of negotiations remained open.

    Its believed Dr. Kissinger took some secret initiative during his tour, which involved visits to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Israel and was now hoping for a period of diplomatic quiet to allow it to come to fruition.

    He gave no indication or the nature of this initiative. However, Dr. Kissinger said he felt that, as a result of his talks this week, there was a chance of progress towards peace on a step by step basis, and while it was not a time to be claiming Triumph, it was not a time for gloom either.

    Almost immediately after arriving in Tunis from Israel, Dr. Kissinger drove to the Presidential Palace for talks and dinner with President Habib Bourguiba.

    He discussed the results of his tour with the Tunisian leader and asked him for any suggestions about how further progress towards peace could be made.
