  • Description

More than 600 people, most of them students, were aboard a ferry boat yesterday when
she was struck by a waterspour and sank within a minute. And though the tragedy occurred within a mile of the shore at Izmit, Turkey, only 50 survivors were picked up by early
today. The small local fishing boats could not manoeuvre in the turbulent seas
and by the time the bigger ships were on the spot, it was too late. An eye
witness said that the ferry, the 150 ton Uskudar, first dug her bows beneath the
waves, then heeled over and vanished. As news of the disaster became known,
naval ships form a nearby base took over the search. But the freak storm had
whipped the shallow waters of the gulf into white-capped fury and there was
    little hope of other survivors.
