  • Description

Australian Prime Minister, William McMahon, faced demonstrators at Sydney Airport on arrival from his Asian four.

They were protesting against the French decision to stage a series of nuclear tests in the Pacific -- and against the Australian government's attitude towards the Tests. Demonstrators carried placards calling for firmer action by the Australian government to stop the trials.

Australia voted against the Tests at the Stockholm environment conference. However, leaders of the demonstration said the vote appeared to have been affirmed only after strong public protests in Australia against the tests.

Mr McMahon and his wife were exported through crowds of hecklers. "Save our children", they chanted.

Mr McMahon spoke with one woman, saying Australia was making its protests known over the French trials.

Demonstration leaders said Australia should clamp sanctions on France; deny access by French aircraft and ships and break off diplomatic relations.

Demonstrators later gathered outside Mr McMahon's Sydney home and continued their protest.
