    THE EIGHTH BRITISH EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES HAD AN EXOTIC OPENING IN KINGSTON, JAMAICA ON THURSDAY. ON A WARM TROPICAL EVENING THE ARENA WAS ABLAZE WITH LIGHT AS BANDS AND ATHLETES PARADED AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH DECLARED THE GAMES OPEN.

    THE CEREMONY BEGAN WITH THE GAMES FLAG BEING RAISED ON THE CENTRE POLE ON THE SCOREBOARD. BESIDE IT WERE RAISED THE JAMAICAN FLAG AND THAT OF AUSTRALIA, WHERE THE LAST GAMES WERE HELD. PRINCE PHILIP, WHO IS PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERATION OF BRITISH EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES, ARRIVED SOON AFTER TO A ROYAL SALUTE FROM THE GUARD OF HONOUR - THE 1ST BATTALION THE JAMAICA REGIMENT.

    THEN THE TEAMS MARCHED IN LED BY AUSTRALIA AS THE LAST HOST NATION AND THEN IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER, WITH THE PRESENT HOSTS, JAMAICA, BRINGING UP THE REAR.

    AT THE SOUND OF AN EIGHT GUN SALUTE, THOUSANDS OF BALLOONS WERE RELEASED, SOME OF FLOAT INTO THE SKY, OTHERS TO SPREAD OVER THE ARENA.

    A FANFARE OF POLICE TRUMPETERS HERALDED THE ARRIVAL OF THE QUEEN'S MESSAGE, WHICH WAS READ OUT BY PRINCE PHILIP.

    IN DECLARING THE GAMES OPEN, JUST BEFORE THE BALLOONS WERE RELEASED, PRINCE PHILIP SAID:
