  • Description

Arab Foreign Ministers and their deputies gathered in Cairo on Monday (21 April) for the reconvened Arab League Council meeting.

The Council had suspended its meeting last month on the assassination of Saudi Arabia's King Faisal.

At the top of the Council's agenda was the time and place of the next Arab Summit Conference. A tentative June date has been set, but the venue has not been agreed on.

Somalia -- the League's latest member -- has put in a strong bid for the Summit to be held in Mogadishu. Somalia's Vice President Ismail Ali Abou Bakr flew to Cairo specially to plead his country's cause. But the other members of the League think Mogadishu is too far from the centre of Arab affairs. They want the Summit to be held in Cairo.

Another major topic for discussion was the long-standing and bitter dispute between Iraq and Syria on sharing the waters of the River Euphrates. The dispute is far from resolution, although a technical committee to investigate the dispute has been suggested.
