    POLICE IN GREEN WOOD, MISSISSIPPI, ON WEDNESDAY ARRESTED 19 NEGROES WHO WERE WALKING IN A GROUP TO THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE TO REGISTER AS VOTERS. THEY DID NOT HOWEVER, TAKE INTO CUSTODY MR. DICK GREGORY, THE NEGRO COMEDIAN, WHO WAS WITH THE GROUP.

    THE GROUP WERE SEEKING TO EXERCISE THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO REGISTER AS VOTERS. POLICE ORDERS FORBID THE GATHERING OF EVEN SMALL GROUPS. AS THE NEGROES WALKED TO THE COURTHOUSE THEY WERE MET BY POLICE AND HELMETED VOLUNTEERS CARRYING RIOT CLUBS.

    THE POLICE BLOCKED THEIR PATH AND ORDERED THEM TO DISPERSE. THE NEGROES QUIETLY STOOD THEIR GROUND. THE POLICE GRABBED THEM AND LOADED THEM INTO AN EMPTY SCHOOL BUS.

    THE 19 NEGROES HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND REFUSING TO OBEY POLICE ORDERS.

    LATER, A CITY OFFICIAL SAID EFFORTS WERE BEING MADE NOT TO ARREST GREGORY, WHO HAS CANCELLED HIS NIGHTCLUB ENGAGEMENTS TO STAY IN GREENWOOD. HE HAS DEMANDED THAT FEDERAL TROOPS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE CITY.

    THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT HAS FILED A SUIT IN A FEDERAL DISTRICT COURT TO OBTAIN AN INJUNCTION AGAINST THE TOWN AND THE COUNTY'S ALLEGED ATTEMPTS TO INTERFERE WITH REGISTRATION
