    Background: On Friday (4 October) the Chief of the Ethiopian Relief Commission, Ato Shemelis Adogne, appealed for world help in alleviating the suffering of people affected by famine in Ethiopia.

    While Mr. Adogne and his deputy, Colonel Tessema Aba Derash, were briefing foreign newsmen at the Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, refugees from drought- stricken areas gathered outside the building.

    Eleven provinces in Ethiopia are affected by adverse conditions. Apart form drought, insect pests -- army worms, locusts and grasshoppers -- have attacked corps in many areas and reduced the expected yields.

    The worst-hit area is around Degahabur in the Harrarghe province, where the situation is described as "extremely serious". The Relief Commission is i the process of setting up a shelter there, and the Ethiopian Nutrition Institute has established a temporary intensive feeding programme.

    The Commission wants to establish a national emergency food stockpile of 60,000 tons, which will be constantly replenished. It is requesting that the initial input should come form international donors. Continuing famine conditions are anticipated in 1975
    SYNOPSIS: Mr. Adogne told newsmen that the Commission is in the process of setting us a shelter in Degahabur. The Ethiopian Nutrition Institute have already established a temporary intensive feeding programme in the area. Food reserves are inadequate in Ethiopia at the moment. To counteract this, the Commission is asking foreign donors to contribute sixty-thousand tons of food, to establish a national emergency stockpile, which will be constantly replenished. Continuing famine replenished. Continuing famine conditions are expected in 1975.
