  • Description

Argentina's President, Maria Estela Peron, received another stiff blow to her prestige on Tuesday (8 July) when the Senate ignored her instructions and elected a new Senate President.

By an overwhelming 50-4 vote, the Senators chose long-time Peronist, Italo Luder, 59, as their President. Senor Luder is now next in line for the Presidency should Senora Peron step down.

Senora Peron had asked the Senate to leave its Presidency vacant so that the next in succession would be Raul Lastiri, Speaker in the House of Deputies.

The Senate rebuff comes in the wake of Senora Peron's failure to stand up to union pressure for pay rises ranging up to 150 per cent. The Government had annulled union negotiated pay rises in an attempt to limit them all to 50 per cent. That triggered a general strike and President Person was forced to back down.

Much of the opposition is directed at Senor Jose Lopez Rega, Senora Peron's personal secretary and Minister of Social Welfare. He is considered by many to wield too much power over the President. He has also been accused of being behind the appointment of Economics Minister Celestino Rodrigo, whose 50 per cent devaluation of the peso at the beginning of June helped set off the crisis which has gripped the country ever since.
